The app collects nothing

This site counts visits if you let it. Here is exactly what goes where.

The app

Hem has no account, no analytics and no telemetry. It opens your files where they are on your Mac, and they never leave it.

The only request it makes on its own is the check for a new version, which it asks your permission for on the first launch and which you can turn off in Settings. It fetches the list of releases from hem.md and sends nothing about you or your documents. The server counts these requests per day, by app version and country, to know how many copies are in use; nothing that could identify you is kept. Images a document links to on the web are loaded, as a browser would load them.

This website

hem.md is served through Cloudflare, which, like any web host, sees your IP address to deliver the pages. Cloudflare also counts page views and measures how fast pages load for visitors, without cookies and without anything that identifies you.

If you choose Accept in the cookie banner, the site sets analytics cookies and records the pages you open, where you came from, your approximate location and the kind of device you use. We use this only to see which pages help people, and to make the site better and easier to use. IP addresses are not stored. If you choose Decline, or have not chosen yet, no cookies are set and only anonymous signals without any identifier are sent.

You can change your answer at any time with Cookie settings, also at the bottom of every page.

Downloads of the app are counted the same way as update checks: a daily total per file and country, with no cookies and nothing that identifies you.

Files you open in the “Try it” panel on the front page are read by your browser and go nowhere else.
